Are You Being Served? (1972-1985)Our Rating: 4/5
Created By: David Croft, Jeremy Lloyd Starring: Mollie Sugden, John Inman and Frank Thornton
Classic British comedy TV series set in a Department Store called Grace Brothers, with many wonderful characters and rude innuendos throughout. There was the fussy Manager Mr Rumbold (Nicholas Smith); the pompous and very serious Floor Walker Captain Peacock (Frank Thornton) who was in charge of Ladies and Menswear; Mrs Slocombe (Mollie Sugden) was the bossy salesperson on Ladies and Accessories, along with her assistant Miss Brahms (Wendy Richard), who she supervised. Mr Humphries (John Inman) was the very camp senior salesman on Menswear, who has got to be one of the shows most favourite characters with his famous catchphrase "Im free!" whenever there was a customer to serve, along with Mrs Slocombe who constantly changed her hair colour and often spoke about her cat, who she always referred to as her pussy. There were other regular characters in the show but unfortunately space doesn't allow for me to name them all here. It also featured guest appearances of many stars, Joanna Lumley being one of them. The show often boasted over 20 million viewers and I certainly remember it being a favourite in our house and something not to miss. It was classic British family favourite and many a happy memory was had from those fantastic episodes. Try and catch some if you can, you will be in for a treat and although it is now somewhat dated with its comedy content, it will still appeal to young and old and guarantee to put a smile on your face. The department store in the series was based on the real-life store Clements, the first department store in England. Clements was in Watford, just north of London, and closed in 2005. All scenes in all the episodes were filmed entirely in television studios. The "lift voice" heard during the theme song played in each episode is that of Stephanie Gathercole who plays Mr. Rumbold's secretary in the earliest episodes. Frank Thornton, Mollie Sugden, John Inman, Wendy Richard and Nicholas Smith are the only actors to appear in all 10 seasons. Mr. Tebbs (James Hayter) was the only character to ever be given a departure storyline (he retired). Everyone else who left the show simply disappeared and was never mentioned again.
